$199 Blu-Ray Drive!!

The format wars continue!!

Just when you thought the wars were begin to simmer down. No, no, no. They just begin to heat up. This looks like an apparent retaliation to HD-DVD's latest price cuts of their players. Blu-Ray strikes back with this pretty drive from Lite-On. When will this thing end and when can we see a clear winner in sight?? Keep dreamin' cause we are just in the midst of this battle and it looks like more price cuts may be headed our way. This is a good thing for the consumer, better products and cheaper prices!! Who wouldn't want that? Well maybe the manufacturers. LOL. The battle rages on across the entire spectrum of devices -- which is why we've seen the poor $199 DH-401S BD-ROM drive from Philips and Lite-on was touted as the solution to those $200 HD-A2s in a few spots. That's quite a stretch, obviously, but it's still much cheaper than any other BD-ROM drives we've seen. The read-only SATA drive pulls data off BD media at 4X, single layer DVDs at 12X, DVD-DL and DVD±RW at 8x, and CDs at 32X. Giving up write capabilities is of course very limiting, but for those of you building out HTPCs, this bad boy might be just the right number for you. This could be the cheapest Blu-Ray drive on the market, which goes to show you how heated this thing is really getting!! First the HD-DVD player price cuts all over town and now this!! How far will this war rage on?? Only time will tell! But, we here at Techfiends are leaning a little more towards the Blu-Ray given its higher storage capabilities! Goooo Blu-Ray!!
